Day One of RECon Vegas 2013 a Success

Yesterday was day one of the International Counsel of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Global Retail Real Estate Convention. ICSC’s RECon (or “The Show” as some call it) is part “real deal” talk and part networking in hopes of a future deal.  

RECon is held in two million square feet of convention space at the Las Vegas Convention Center.  Not all the networking happens during the actual trade show—individuals also network at restaurants, parties, events, hotels, the monorail, nightspots and the list goes on and on.

Now, you might be wondering who’s at “The Show”?  There are the obvious answers like retailers, hotel companies, developers, brokers, financiers and municipalities that attend RECon.

But there are also industries present that provide services to the commercial real estate industry like software developers, database companies, roofing contractors, lighting companies, insurance groups and many more.

Several brokers from Southpace attend RECon every year. And because we are a member of the Retail Brokers Network (RBN), Southpace has the opportunity to have a real presence at the show and meet with our clients in the RBN booth.

Day one of RECon seemed to get the show off to a great start. Deal talk and the mood seemed very good yesterday and I didn’t hear the words “recession” once (good riddance!).

As usual, the RBN booth is very active this year. Our brokers are running in several directions to be sure we get the job done for our clients.

It seems the municipalities are also active and talking incentives even for smaller restaurants and retail developments.

In general, it’s just always good to see old friends and meet new people at the show and get that face time with your out-of-town clients.

One last thing…want to know the secret to “the show”?

Always use your time to meet new people, shake hands with old friends, seek out that new tenant or development. Definitely stay hydrated, keep some pain reliever handy, wear comfortable shoes and try to get at least one new thing to work on for when you return to the office.
