Donating a little can mean a lot this holiday season

By Sloan Stevens, Southpace Broker

Being involved in our community and doing what we can to be charitable towards others is a big part of our culture at Southpace. After making a visit recently to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, a new idea for helping others during the holiday season was born.

I went with a few fellow members of United Way of Alabama young leader’s group to the Food Bank and had the opportunity to talk to the director and learn more about what the organization has been doing since 1982.

In the last 30 years, the number of counties served by the food bank has increased from 3 to 12, and the number of agencies distributing food in Central Alabama has increased from 30 to 200.

The Community Food Bank operates as a central clearinghouse for new and commercially excess food that is fully edible but might otherwise go to waste. The food is then distributed to non-profit agencies and religious organizations that directly serve the needy through their own programs. These programs include shelters for the homeless, soup kitchens, residential facilities for the elderly and handicapped and shelters for abused women and children.

The operation they manage is a great way to handle food donations. As individuals, we’re not always well-equipped to make decisions about where donations should go, but they have the necessary experience and expertise to determine where items are most needed. Last year, they distributed 9.1 million pounds of food!

After my trip to the Food Bank, I thought about the Title Building in downtown Birmingham where our offices are located and how it would be a great place to hold a food drive. We have a lot of tenants in the building, plus many neighbors downtown. We also see many clients here regularly, so it’s a perfect central location where people are often coming and going.

Through this Friday, December 14, we’ll be collecting non-perishable items in the lobby of the Title Building at 300 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. Everyone is welcome to stop by and drop in canned food items, dry cereals, rice, flour, sugar, toilet paper, blankets, soap and more.

Thank you to all who have already made donations. Let’s keep ‘em coming!
