The studio, which is set to open in early July, will host classes for all genders and age groups across all disciplines of dance including tap, jazz, classical ballet, pointe, hip hop and musical theatre.
Kelly Mann Holt, owner and artistic director, is thrilled about the new space. It not only provides excellent visibility for her studio, but it also offers a convenience factor for children in the area who want to take dance classes during the school year.
“It truly is the perfect location. We are within a few blocks of three schools and the Shades Cahaba Elementary School tunnel literally empties into our parking lot.” Kelly says. “I love that we can offer assistance to working parents because their children can walk to our studio after school, giving the parents time to pick them up after their work day is complete.”
“The right location coupled with a cooperative landlord made this relocation a win-win situation,” said Southpace broker Anne Michaels who represented Kelly. “Backstage Dance Centre will have a virtual billboard on the best corner in Homewood with 16,000 cars carrying potential dancers by the studio every day.”
While the location is new, Kelly has been teaching dance at the Backstage Dance Centre since she first opened her doors 13 years ago.
“I really love what I do. I feel lucky everyday that when I wake up in the morning and put my feet on the floor, I know I am going to a job that I love,” she said.
Her passion for dance is evident through the multiple annual trips she takes to New York City to train with a three-time Tony Award nominee and Broadway dancers, which ultimately leads to the success of her students.
Kelly has had numerous students to receive dance scholarships to both in-state and out-of-state colleges, one of which, Emily Fleisig, recently earned the largest musical theatre scholarship possible from Birmingham Southern. Another of her students, Jane Margaret Turner, recently finished performing with Broadway’s national tour of Shrek the Musical and also has an audition set in New York City next week for another Tony-nominated Broadway show.
The Backstage Dance Centre will offer four dance camps for preschool to professional levels at the opening of the new studio on July 8, 2013. There will be a princess fairy ballerina camp for four to six year olds, a triple threat dance camp for ages 6-12, an advanced summer intensive for ages 13+, and an adult tap workshop.
